This week is all about focused 0CR race prep for TWC next week in Greece. This is my Tue "Run/Strength" workout, but with a few extras like spears & slackline (normally those are reserved for my "OCR" workout - which will still get them). No cycling this week, as much as it pains me to not, it's all OCR & running. I still have my Wed "10x Heavy Carry", Thu "OCR", Fri "Skills & Drills" workouts + Sat/Sun B2B long weekend runs.

No, you can't count incline treadmill runs towards vertical gain numbers. You aren't traveling thru actual elevations. Eg, from 7000ft to 13000ft is a drop from 16% 0² to 12.7% 0². That fact alone voids any notion that a treadmill earns you elevation. You're not experiencing any 0² loss on a treadmill, as you moved thru 0 different elevations. You stayed at one the whole time. Uphill treadmill runs have legit benefits. But elevation gain is not one of them. Just because your treadmill is angeled up, doesn't mean you accumulated elevation. You can't have your treadmill tell you you gained +11k feet of vert & think you're Everest capable. Don't insult the F1 driver who's spent years refining their abilities by thinking you're as capable because you play a video game on your couch. You didn't actually race a car. You didn't actually climb any vert.

Big yearly milestone reached this weekend: 500,000 feet of vertical gain (502,215 officially). Although I'm not relentlessly chasing it like I did last year (639k in '25) because it requires constant attention by making sure every effort amasses vertical, eeking out every possible foot per effort & constant planning just for vertical. This demonstrates that my normal everyday efforts still allow me to hit 500k. And I have 2.5 months & 3 races left in 2026. I won't match 2025, but I'll still pull a legit final number.

🏃Sat: 4h 47m • 11.1 miles • 4020ft vert
🚴Sun: 4h 5m • 43.3 miles • 4900ft vert
🟰 8h 52m • 54.4 mi • 8,920ft vert

What's happening in my off the bike mile 5 run? The line chart shows each run mile 2 thru 4 bumps up 2 levels (L) of speed from the previous mile = each mile gets faster than the previous mile.

On mile 5 I make the same 2 level bump at the start as 2-4 got. BUT, then I 1x bump again at 5.25, again at 5.50, again at 5.75 and bump 2x at 5.90 to finish off the last .10 mile extra strong. Not a sprint per se, but stronger than the previous .90 to mimic a final push to the finish. So mile 5 is the fastest overall mile + it has added gear shifts within it.

My "OCR" workout: hill run, spears, hoists, slackline, push-ups, multi-rig, farmers carry. 5 rounds. For time. 1x a week. In the 🇬🇷 prep window.

These are my favorite non-racing weekends. A BIG run followed up by a BIG ride (or vice versa). This is a typical setup, but some weekends are standouts. This is one of those. The vid shows the totals, but here's the daily breakdown.

Saturday (long run):
3 peaks
4 hours
2:40 of just climbing
8.6 miles
4,307 ft of vertical gain
13,650 max altitude

Sunday (long ride):
1 peak
3:53 time
3:00 of just climbing
44.2 miles
5,152 ft of vertical gain
10,450 max altitude

I've been waiting for this day for 3 weeks. Ever since I got back from my Switzerland MTB & race trip. I knew it would come, it always does, it always has, it was just a matter of time. I know the routine. I've been thru it many times.

So what was I waiting for? To turn a corner. To feel strong, fast, fluid, smooth, breathing deep, putting out power, snappy legs, rhythmic, recovered & firing on all cylinders. I purposefully lagged a bit in the intervening 25 days & so this comes right on time as I'm starting my Greece race prep.

None of these tools are new. A focused heavy carry

None of these tools are new. A focused heavy carry workout isn't anything new. The trail route isn't new. The only new thing is this arrangement & the workout details. Today it was out/back (or up/down) for each tool, for time, done 3x (since it's such a short effort for me). It gets progressively harder as you go, especially past the atlas. And that final 120lb ammo can carry up - down the steps... freakin harsh.
